Since it's quite certain now (we'll know much more in a few hours) that she'll be undergoing chemotherapy, the doctors have switched her to a daily injection of heparin. This essentially does the same job as the coumidin, but does not require any regular followups. Once a day, no tweaking necessary. It also means that she won't have to stop taking the pills and switch to injections any time she needs any procedure (biopsy, etc). She would just delay her injection on the day of a procedure. Judi is getting good at poking herself as she had to do some self-injections while the pill dose was being adjusted. Finally, the pills effect can be severely reduced in 10-20% of patients having chemotherapy - so switching to the injections puts the odds in Judi's favor (for clearing up the existing blood clots and preventing any further clots from forming).
I had wondered about the seriousness of the clots. The doctor stated that they are treatable and should be the least of our concerns right now. So, we'll just let the injections do their job and go on with the next phase.
Judi's mom left today. She needed to take care of some things and had some appointments in St. Kitts. It was great having her here, not only to help with domestic chores - but to be with Judi; to give her hope and encouragement. She is a cancer survivor, and she looks forward to the day when Judi will be too.
We see the oncologist today. I've got a notebook with me. I hope I'll be able to keep up with all the info we're expecting to get.
Something else is affecting us this week and today. My sister-in-law had a tragedy in her family this past Sunday. Her niece was in a car accident where her neice's baby was killed. I don't have the family members straight, but a young man was killed immediately also, and a 15 year old girl suffered brain damage and died in the hospital. Her organs are being used to give life and healing to others.
